Friends?

Friends are great, you can hang out with them, do stupid things with them...it's even better when they don't judge and you feel very open with them. My point? I have been self-evaluating, what kind of friend have I been? It's sad to say that I didn't really grasp the importance of developing relationships with people until I hit university. Sure, I was nice to people and maybe hung out with my 'friends' sometimes, but I didn't really go out of my way to try to get to know them better. I really wish I understood that in high school...but I suppose it's better late than never.

Looking back, I noticed that I tended to make quite a few new 'acquaintances', people that I could small talk to/sit beside during class, maybe even hang out with them during lunch time. But it was rare for me to continue staying in contact with them once I no longer am in the same class with them. Facebook gives me this false pretension that I am now 'friends' with them, but Facebook friends aren't really friends. They should just be called the Facebook list of 'people you know'. Anyways, it only recently dawned on me that to make long-lasting friends, I have to go out of my way to speak with them, hang out with them, and not just do it when it's convenient for me. The only reason I still have people that I can really call friends is by the grace of God. Literally. Church was a big point of constant contact with people and school was the other one. The people that I usually hang out with now are either from church, or I've gone to the same school with them for a long time, or both. Even then, it wasn't until uni that I realized I didn't know them very well. I couldn't say what they liked/disliked (at least, not stuff that everyone else didn't already know). If asked to describe them: 'ummmm...........................' This wasn't just limited to friends either, I didn't really treasure my family and I definitely took God for granted. If I were to compare, I would say I treated Him like Nobita did to Doraemon. If you don't know who they are, look them up NOW.
So, I've decided to change this. I'm going to do my best to invest into my relationships now, to attempt to know people better, to go out of my way to see them. I'll probably fall short and screw up, and there will be many more times where I won't know the right thing to say. It'll be messy, but I'm positive it'll be worth it.

Wow, such a long post >.< I think I'll try to update with shorter, funny things that I find when I'm browsing through the internet instead of studying. Instead of only having long boring posts.
